Welcome to Subestimado, Surprising Spain.

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Spain?
I know- you never think of Spain. But really, what image do you have?
Bullfighting?
Beaches?
Sangria?
Hola, ¿Cómo estás?
World Cup champions?

I'll admit that before first visiting the Iberian peninsula in 1997, I knew very little about Spain. But since that time I have come to love the country, its culture and its people. My wife, Donna and I began working there when our four children were all in elementary school and today they all call Spain "home". In the years prior to our first visit, we were guilty of what we have come to find out is a common trait here in the United States: Underestimating Spain. Underestimating her beauty, underestimating her culture, underestimating the influence she has had on our own North American culture. Underestimating virtually everything- except their soccer team, of course. Everyone knows the power of the "Furia Roja", the Spanish national soccer team that walked away with the world championship of men's professional soccer in 2010.

So recently as our family sat around the holiday table, we reflected on our many years in Spain and agreed that we needed to share a few stories. Stories of the people we met, the places we visited, and the awesome experiences we shared. We want to do our part to change your perception from underestimating Spain to enjoying her in every way.

This blog is our story. "Subestimado" means "Underestimated". Surprising Spain. Come with us on the journey. Tell us how you underestimated Spain and what you have since learned. We are looking forward to hearing from you!
